Hello everyone. I have a 40D and a 5D, and I'm thinking about selling the 40D and buying a used 1D Mark II instead. I use the 40D almost exclusively with a 100-400 for birding, but I'm finding that the images are quite soft and the low- to mid-ISO noise less than impressive, especially compared to the sharpness/noise performance I get with the 5D. The 1DX Mark II doesn't give me that impression. With a new sensor, Canon's first with on chip A/D conversion, dual pixel autofocus, and a raft of refinements and incremental improvements over previous models, the 1DX Mark II feels like a true leap forward from the conventional stills 1D cameras of the past. Worth the extra outlay. Ahead of our full review, here are sample images and videos taken with the new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera. At 50 MP, we are talking about approximately 4.1µ pixel pitch and roughly 8700×5800 image size. Compare that to 4.9µ pixel pitch on the D810 with a 36 MP sensor and 7360×4912 image size There's a lot that's new in Canon's flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, including a sensor that offers best-in-class dynamic range. Again, the difference here is due to the different camera formats. For instance, Canon full-frame, f/4 zoom lenses offer better value than Fujifilm APS-C, f/2.8 zoom lenses. Canon offers a similar depth of field without being that much larger or heavier—although they only let in half the light wide open.
